The Wizard of Oz

The Drama Club of the International Division of No. 2 High School of East China Normal University put on a year-end performance The Wizard of Oz on December 10. At 1 pm, the curtain of the stage was gently lifted.

The Wizard of Oz is a story about a kind-hearted girl Dorothy who was blown away by a tornado into a strange and magical country – the Land of Oz, who lost her way home. There, she met one by one the mindless Scarecrow, the uncaring Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. To realize their own wishes, they helped each other, worked together hand in hand and went through various hardships while encountering many weird things. In the end, with their extraordinary intelligence and perseverance, they fulfilled their wishes, as they had wished.

The performance consisted of five acts.

Act I. Cyclone

Act II. Magical land of Oz

Act III. Journey to Emerald City

Act IV. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Act V. Returning Home

To the cheerful melodies, the red velvet curtain slowly opened. Colorful lights from left and right on the stage created a dynamic ambience of alternating bright and dark. Full of energy, the actors appeared on the stage with a professional ease and started their performance.

The show not only kept the classic songs in the movie, but also reproduced many scenes of fantasy in the novel on the basis of loyalty to the original work, such as the swirling tornado, the colorful Munchkins Country and the magnificent and miraculous Emerald City.

The familiar songs together with the amazing stage effects immediately brought the audience to the mysterious Land of Oz.

The performance also recreated the classic songs Over the Rainbow and We’re Off To See The Wizard in the movie, bringing back the childhood memories of the students in the audience.
